89 anglers at the captain’s meeting

North Alabama Kayak Angler’s first event of 2016, The Open, is now in the record books. We had a great turnout with 89 anglers, dozens of campers the night before, and 78 in attendance for the weigh in at Top O’ The River – Guntersville

We congratulate Ben Davis for the win with 53.75 inches and taking home the grand prize of $770. This was Ben’s first ever kayak tournament and he also won a $50 YakAttack gift card for having the highest finish of the first time kayak tournament participants. In fact Ben bought his first kayak only a couple of months ago. This shows that anyone can win any given day. Way to go Ben!

We also congratulate Lanny Watkins for taking the 2nd place prize of $350 with 53.5 inches and Josh Tidwell for taking the 3rd place prize of $150 with 52.50 inches. Also in the money were John Taylor winning $85 for 4th, Matt Dalaplane winning $70 for 5th, Jonathan Ledford winning $60 for 6th, Matthew Bass winning $45 for 7th and Daniel Sanders winning $30 for 8th.

John Taylor also won the Big Bass prize of $400 and an Osprey Rods gift pack with a monster 21.75 incher that crushed a 4” swim bait as he wasn’t even paying attention. Sometimes it really is better to be lucky than good.

Randall Wallace won the Big Wills Outfitters prize pack for first fish scored, Logan McGee won the The Sportsman’s Corner prize pack for being the best youth finisher, and Daniel Sanders won a custom shirt from Wallace Performance Printing and Apparel for being the highest finisher while wearing a NAKA shirt from Wallace Performance Printing.

In addition to the winners, several lucky participants went home with door prizes provided by our sponsors including a Manley Rods valued at $175, a Bending Branches Angler Classic valued at $150, a Cabela’ss Verano spinning reel valued at $150. Profound Outdoors and 412 Bait Co by Donald Corbett also sponsored prize packs that were awarded as fun prizes for crazy things that happened during the event.

All anglers entering and scoring a fish have earned Angler of the Year points. AOTY will walk away with a kayak from NuCanoePower-Pole® Shallow Water Anchor , $200 Academy Sports + Outdoors gift card, Bending Branches Angler Ace paddle, $100 gift card from Yak Attack, and $50 gift card from Premier League Lures lures!

Again, we would like to thank all sponsor partners and anglers for making this the largest NAKA event yet. We hope to see you all again at the next NAKA trail stop at Wheeler on April 16th.

Updated and revised to reflect corrections to scoring errors. One was self reported by an angler and another was discovered after the original posting.
